April 19th, 2014

The Florida Model European Union - or just FMEU – is Florida's first secondary and post-secondary Model European Union conference. Model EU is proudly hosted at the University of Florida, welcoming delegates from around the state to Gainesville. At FMEU 2014, we are introducing brand new committees and a fun-filled day in North Florida. Whether this is your first conference or your sixteenth (and we know many with more experience than that!), we promise that FMEU 2014 will have something for you.

See you this April.

Students who get involved succeed.

The Model European Union is an adaptation of the popular Model United Nations (MUN), but differs in its conception, organization, roles, and outcomes. The MUN is, by and large, a simulation for students of diplomacy and foreign affairs, while the Model EU (MEU) simulates policymaking at the ministerial and head of government levels in the European Union. While the UN is an international organization, most scholars regard the EU as being more than this, though the terms they use to describe it, vary. Some, for example, view it as a rather special type of international organization (IO). Some emphasize that it has state-like properties. And some suggest it is a quasi-federal system.

Model European Union (MEU) is a unique simulation of EU decision-making and politics, that will take place annually in Florida. The project is popular among students from diverse backgrounds and studies spanning from Law, International Relations, Political Sciences and European Affairs to History, Media Studies, and Interpreting. In the course of the simulation, participants debate two controversial, real-life legislative proposals drafted by the European Commission and simulate EU law-making by acting as Members of the European Parliament or Members of the Council of the European Union. It goes without saying that MEU amounts to a unique learning process that focuses on the workings and dynamics of EU institutions when producing EU law. MEU is therefore an educational project that succeeds in giving participants the opportunity to develop their skills in EU law, debating and negotiations at an EU level and to understand the complexities of the EU in practice.
